Category D Machines: Fruit Machines, Grabbers and Coin Pushers
Updated: Sep 20
Category D does not describe one style of cabinet. It includes several kinds of machine, which is why a cash-prize fruit machine, a toy grabber and a coin pusher can have different limits.
The Gambling Commission lists a maximum 10p stake and £5 prize for money-prize Category D machines. Non-cash machines other than grabbers have limits of 30p and £8; crane grabbers have £1 and £50 limits.
For combined cash and non-cash prizes, the ordinary limit is a 10p stake and £8 prize, with no more than £5 in cash. Coin pushers and penny falls have a 20p stake limit and £20 prize limit, including no more than £10 in cash.
Those figures describe maximums. Read the actual cabinet labels to find the price and prizes offered by that machine, and follow the venue’s age restrictions.
The government has consulted on changes to parts of Category D. Keep consultation proposals separate from the published limits when comparing machines or writing about an older cabinet.
