After the shortened Victoria Pier returned to Colwyn Bay's promenade in 2021, the question was what should come next. The pier trust wanted the restored structure to become a place people could use and enjoy, with facilities that would give them a reason to stay.

Our November 2021 report discussed proposals for an events and amusements venue. In the trust's own account that autumn, director Amy Dyke described work on designs for the shortened pier, followed by the longer-term ambition to extend it and reinstate facilities above the deck.

The trust said it intended to hold public consultations once the plans were ready. Funding, permissions and the practical work of developing the site were still part of the process; the proposals were not a completed new arcade.

The appeal was easy to understand. A pier can be somewhere to meet, watch an event or spend part of a seaside afternoon, as well as a landmark at the end of the promenade. The debate was about what combination of uses would serve Colwyn Bay.

This article records the ambitions discussed in 2021. For progress since then, follow the pier trust's updates rather than treating the old proposals as a list of facilities open today.
